High School student audition requirements

Meter – Be able to play in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 C, cut time, 6/8, 9/8 and easy changing/asymmetrical meter

Key Signatures and scales - None to five flats and three sharps. Chromatic scale quarter note mm 120 two octaves ascending and descending.

Tempo - Largo-Allegro (56-144) ritard, accel., rall.

Rhythm - Basic duple and triple syncopation, dotted rhythms

Dynamics - pp to ff. Cresc., Decresc.. Sfz, Fp

Articulation - Attach, release, slurs, staccato, accent, legato, tenuto.

Tonguing - Brass players must show competence in single, double and triple tonguing. Reed players fast single tonguing.

Ornaments - Trills with entry or exit grace notes, double or triple grace note figures.

Solos/Tone quality - Be able to play short solos with good tone quality

Length (endurance) - Be able to play compositions of 3 – 7 minutes

Percussion - All common non-pitched Latin and traditional percussion. Bass drum, snare drum rudiments, bells, and beginning mallet instruments.
